In addition to Psychotherapy, I also offer Coaching. But what exactly is coaching, and how is it different from regular psychotherapy? Both Coaching and Psychotherapy help individuals clarify who they are, who they want to become, and develop strategies to reach their goals. However, unlike psychotherapy, Coaching is not focused on identifying the causes of mental health issues or relieving conditions like depression and anxiety. Coaching does not involve a diagnosis and focuses on the present and future, rather than the past.
While Coaching shares some similarities with Solution-Based Brief Psychotherapy (SFBT)—such as asking powerful questions, maintaining a strength-based approach, and fostering a sense of hope—Coaching is distinct. It does not address clinical levels of distress and does not involve a diagnosis. Coaching is also not about mentoring or giving advice. Instead, it helps you get unstuck by solving problems, figuring out what you want, and discovering how to achieve your goals.
Coaching is conversation-based and driven by questions designed to help you think differently about your situation. It’s not about being told what to do; rather, it’s about uncovering your own answers with the help of powerful questions. Often, the solutions are within you—we just need to help them emerge.
Coaching is distinct from psychotherapy. However, a coach with years of experience as a psychotherapist, combined with a deep understanding of psychology, anthropology, and sociocultural issues, brings an additional and valuable skillset to the table, even while working within the boundaries of coaching.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is of the utmost importance in Coaching. Your ability to speak freely is essential for achieving good results. I am bound by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics, ensuring that everything you share remains confidential unless it involves harm to yourself or others or if I am required to disclose information under a subpoena.
Billing
Coaching is not covered by insurance, but unlike therapy, it may be tax-deductible. Please check with your tax accountant for advice on your specific situation.
